I am doing my first wedding cake next weekend. The bride would like ribbon on the seams along with a buttercreme pearl edge. I know to apply tape to back of ribbon to prevent it absorbing the oil, but will the pearl border also soak into the ribbon. how do people handle this ? I can't wait until same day, as I am the grooms mother !

Yes, the oil from the buttercream will soak in from the top. I would do my border first and then apply the ribbon just enough above the border line that it almost touching but not quite. This is what I do and I never have had any problems with oil spots on the ribbon.

Apply tape to the ribbon as you mentioned. Mix up a small batch of royal icing and use it to make the pearl border. It will work. I've piped RI on a crusting buttercream cake and it worked fine. HTH
