Hello, I am new at cake decor & am going to attempt to make my SIL bday cake next weekend. The design I wanted to do is: Large round cake on bottom w/giant cupcake sitting on top. I haven't ever worked w/Fondet & was wondering if there was anything I could use that looks the same once on the cake & tastes good?
Also does anyone have any advice for me before I get started? I plan on using a Strawberry filling for both the round cake as well as the cupcake. Will I need to place a board between the cupcake & the round cake on the bottom?? I'm worried the cupcake will be too heavy. Any feedback will be greatly appreciated.

I would first recommend a marshmallow fondant.
Ingredients: 1 pound mini marshmallows 1 1/2 pounds powdered sugar (use the good stuff or sift the other stuff to avoid lumps) 2 T water Vegetable shortening Put marshmallows in microwave safe bowl. Add water. Microwave on hi 30 seconds at a time, stirring between times, until melted (usually about 2 minutes total). While marshmallows are working in microwave, generously grease counter top with shortening. Add about 1/2 of powdered sugar to marshmallows and mix til partially combined. Generously grease hands with shortening. Dump mallow/sugar mix onto counter and begin kneading. Knead remaining powdered sugar into mix. Add shortening to hands if it gets too sticky. To store, cover fondant with a layer of shortening and wrap tightly in plastic wrap a couple times and store in ziplock bag until ready to use. Best to roll out using corn starch on your surface. If fondant seems too dry, knead in shortening lightly. Easy to color and tastes like marshmallows. I would put a piece of poster board (covered with foil or plastic wrap) supported on the round cake. Take dowel pin and cut into lengths that are the height of bottom cake. press them into the base. Add some butter cream in that area after dowels are placed. Put your support foam core on top of the dowels. Add a little more butter cream and then place your cupcake on top. to keep your filling from oozing out, outline the cake layer you are putting it on with a thick piping of butter cream to keep it in, also known as a dam. Hope this helps! best wishes. Looking forward to photos! Last edited by hippiechick224; 04-23-2011 at 06:31 PM. |

Royal Pippin or Terrdala could work. At 100 you can go with Chief Bwork. I'll be honost though, I have no real experience with a Masqueraider, but I know those equipment pieces from my Iop. Chief Bwork will give you Strength and Agility at 100. If you use the whole set, you'll have 5 MP base.
